So Ryan and I have to decide soon what kind of birth control to use after the baby comes. We know this is the last child that we biologically want to have (I am totally not doing this again!!) and so are thinking about getting someone snipped...if you know what I mean. The only problem is that the doctors are very hesitant to sterilize someone so young as Ryan or myself. The other option that I am considering is the Mirena IUD. I have done some reading on it, but don't know anyone who uses that form of birth control...Do you? What do you guys think? Anyone out there have positives or negatives about vasectomies, tubal ligations, or mirena IUDs?? What are your experiences??

This must be the strangest blog I've ever read. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's just so straight forward, no beating around the bush here. We need to stop having babies and want to know what you think we should do about it...hmmm...

Sterilization is too hard on a woman's body. Trust me, I know. It almost ruined my life. Please don't consider that.
It is much easier, no lasting effects & recoup is faster for a man to have a vasectomy.
Just having your "tubes tied" can be reversed later should you decide.
There are so many new things out there now, your options are pretty broad. How about just a simple implant under the skin? As an older woman having been there, I would highly suggest using a "form of" control rather than surgically altering either one of you just yet....For me, it made the problems worse than the problems I was trying to avoid! YOur doing the right thing by asking other opinions. I didn't do that. I listened to the Dr.'s, who had no first hand experience. BIG IRREVERSIBLE MISTAKE!
Hope my opinion sheds some light on one aspect!

I don't have any experience with sterilization, obviously, but I do have a good friend who loves her Mirena thingy so much the company ought to start paying her for all the advertizing she does. She can't say enough about how great it is. It's actually kind of funny how much she loves it.

I love how matter-of-fact you are about this. It's like you're all grown up or something! =)

I'm not extremely familiar with the merina thing but those IUD things have failed on a number of people including my aunt Debra. My aunt Tina is a good one to ask since she's a nurse and all. I think the vasectomy is honestly a great route. I think Ben would still agree after having a miserable experience. Go Ryan, Go!

Was it weird for me to post about birth control?? And as far as being straight forward, is there any other way to approach this topic? I mean really? It is what it is...good old fashioned baby protection. (Can I say baby protection? It's like I am saying I am afraid of babies...although, I do think my biggest fear might be getting pregnant again)

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking that the Mirena might not be the way to go for me. It still has hormones (which all make me sick.) and I am just not sure about wanting a foreign object in my body when a simple cut will do the trick. Now the only problem is how I can keep from getting periods. I only have had one in like 3 years and I would rather not start that all again. Anyone know how to get ride of that?

Sorry, that was not Ryan talking about periods. It was me.

as someone who has been here for Evie and about 2 weeks of Jones, I think I am going to jump on the Cutting Of Les Tubes. Both of you. Just to be safe. But don't go to Ben's Dr. That just doesn't seem safe. But seriously kids.... this is not a thoughtless decision. You KNOW you don't want anymore kids. I don't think I can handle it. Plus, who am I going to hand the torch to? Brahim passed it to me and.... who is left?! But seriously (again) I think it sounds like a grand idea. It's too hard on you physically and emotionally on the both of you. If the Drs won't do it, I've got some sewing scissors and some rubbing alchohol.... I'm just saying.....

If someone is going to get cut, I hate to say it but I think it shoudl be Ryan - historicaly less complications and more easilt reversed if the dude does it (but also more of a chanse of still getting preggers).

IUD technology has come a looooong way in the last 4 years - the doese of horemones are so light (but still effective) that even people who can't take any forms of the pill are okay with the IUD.

I also hear really good things about the implant, although it seems like on the off chanse they go wrong the tend to go REALLY wrong! Again, tech has come a long way on this type of BC in the last few years.

Always always always talk to your Doc - but I know they are going to be less than helpful untill after Baby Girl (or BG as I will now refer to her) is born. I'm sure you know this, but both Planned Parenthood and Birthright have some killer resources on no-baby methods.

Jess, I had my tubes 'tied' oh about 24 years ago and I had no problems. They didn't want to do it either but I knew I didn't (wouldn't) want more than my lovely two. No, if I something happened to one of them I wouldn't want another one. It isn't like you can replace them. Anyway, IUD's really work by constantly irritating the uterine lining and well, I don't know how good that is either. Ryan...give the state of your wonderful wife's health ...do it, do it for Jess.
Chris, I really shouldn't say this..it is totally not PC...but it is interesting that you used the words killer and PP in the same sentence. I better quite now, before I get in trouble.

my body is so sensitive that i just don't mess with synthetic hormones - we do it the "hippie" natural family planning way and it's worked for 3 years . . . but that is my lifestyle choice.

anyway, this is a tough choice and i don't envy you. good for you looking for advice. but definitely go to people who you trust and who know what they are talking about. and READ up on stuff - don't just trust what all the doctors say . . . sometimes they don't even know what they are talking about.
